Biografija

Davor Kajfeš je rođen 1934. u Zagrebu. Glazbom se proofesionalno bavi od 1957., a studij je završio 1964. na Muzičkoj akademiji u Zagrebu. Od 1958. do 1967. bio je član Plesnog orkestra Radiotelevizije Zagreb, a istodobno član i potom umjetnički voditelj Zagrebačkog jazz kvarteta. S tim je, najznačajnijim sastavo u povijesti hrvatskog jazza, snimio niz ploča i nastupao u zemljama Europe, bivšem Sovjetskom savezu i Americi. Najvažnije nastupe ostvario je na Monterey Jazz festivalu s triom i BP Conventionom, te grupom Boška Petrovića. Uz mnogobrojne nastupe snimao je za radio i ploče ostvarivši suradnje s uglednim svjetskim solistima jazza i bluesa, među ostalim s Johnom Lewisom, Artom Farmerom, Buckom Claytonom, Artom Farmerom, Albertom Mangelsdorfom, Redom Mitchellom, Helen Humes, Big Joe Turnerom i T-Bone Walkerom.
Od 1967. živi u Švedskoj. Surađivao je s poznatim skandinavskim umjetnicima, primjerice sa Swendom Asmussenom i Alice Babs. Od 1967. do 1999. djelovao je u Štokholmu gdje je predavao glazbu na Visokoj školi za ples i koreografiju. Pored toga glazbeni je suradnik na satovima tehnike modernog plesa i jazza i u zajednici sa plesačkim pedagozima predaje ritmiku, kompoziciju i improvizaciju prilagođene potrebama u koegzistenciji glazbe i pokreta. Skladao je glazbu za suvremeni ples i jazz dance za mnoge javne produkcije u okvirima škole. I dalje je povremeno aktivan kao predavač i glazbenik te je posljednjih godina posebice angažiran u obrazovanju i prenošenju iskustava na mlađi naraštaj polaznika škola za suvremeni ples u Finskoj i Švedskoj. Od 1988. surađuje i nastupa sa poznatim švedskim skladateljom i violončelistom Peterom Schubackom s kojim izvodi zajednička slobodno improvizirana djela. U Stockholmu je 2002. godine objavljen njihov CD sa snimkom improviziranog muziciranja za Švedski radio pod nazivom "Impositions".
Kajfeš je poznat i kao skladatelj, ne samo za jazz skupine već i za film. Najznačajnija djela su mu: "Davor's Blues", "Digression", “Mrtve magle”, "Eftertanke", “Arnold's Orbit”, "Collision", “Arabesque”, "Ornaments" i "Boogie Balkanique".

DAVOR KAJFES: Pianist, composer and teacher was born in 1934, in Zagreb, Croatia. He graduated in the Academy of Music in Zagreb in 1964, but his professional playing experience dates back to 1957, when he began performing with the Zagreb Radio-TV Big Band. While with the big band, he composed for the worldly known Zagreb Film Company and various TV shows. In 1959, he joined the Zagreb Jazz Quartet and quickly thereafter became its leader. In the period that followed, he toured with the quartet in Europe and the USSR, and played and recorded with: Art Farmer, Buck Clayton, Csaba Dese, Helen Humes, Big Joe Turner, T-Bone Walker, Albert Mangelsdorff, Red Mitchell, and other prominent jazz musicians and singers.

Since 1967, Davor has been a resident of Stockholm, Sweden, where he performed among others with Swend Asmussen and Alice Babs. With her he also made a record “Simple Isn’t Easy”. His daily work was devoted to the University College of Dance and Choreography, where he has been teaching, playing and composing for dance (modern and jazz) for more than 30 years. Additional composing and performances included the TV ballet “Balanse” with W. Nicks as choreographer, and the TV production “Choreographer is Improvising” with P. Christopher. On his many visits to his native city Zagreb, he played in many concerts, jazz clubs, and made various recordings at the radio, TV Zagreb and CD productions.

Most important performances were in 1979, at the Monterey Jazz Festival with trio and “BP Convention” group. In 1995-96, he played piano duo with John Lewis in a performance in Stockholm, Sweden.

Some of his more important compositions are: Davor’s Blues, Degression, Ornaments, Boogie Balkanique, Eftertanke, Collision (1974 won the prize at the “Concours International de Composition de themes de Jazz-Monaco”). Working with dance in various forms was and still is his main preoccupation,, but occasionally he is returning to his lifetime passion, the music of jazz. Nowadays, he is working with composer/cellist Peter Schuback. Their CD “Impositions” was released in 2002.

U razgovoru povodom koncerta što će ga 21. listopada održati u KD Lisinski na Međunarodnim danima jazza Davor Kajfeš je rekao: Kvaliteta svirke Zagrebačkog jazz kvarteta može se mjeriti s dostignućima današnjih renomiranih grupa domaće i međunarodne scene. U to sam se uvjerio nedugo kada mi je Boško Petrović predao demo CD s glazbom s koncerta u Luganu 1966.

Kad pri sviranju ili skladanju koristim ritmove iz našeg podneblja koji su bili (no više nisu) neuobičajene metrike - pet četvrtina ili sedam četvrtina ili devet četvrtina ili jedanaest četvrtina, prisiljen si u improvizaciji razmišljati na drukčiji način.

Neke stvari treba uzeti bez jako kritičnog oka i koncentrirati se napozitivne elemente koje takav susrert donosi sa sobom. Kao kad nastupi sudar zvijezda na nebu ili kad se postavi nova konstalacija koja dođe u jednom trenutku i više nikad. To je tipična stvar kod jazza. Jednom i nikad više.
