Norrland (Sweden)
Nordic jazz has always been informed by its traditional music, creating that expansive soulful sound that has often been referred to as the Nordic blues. In ‘Norrland', this duo of leading Swedish musicians Jonas Knuttson (saxophone) and guitarist Johan Norberg (guitar) the influence is explicit.

Norrland refers to Sweden's northernmost region,  a place of cool white landscapes illuminated by the midnight sun.  It's a character that radiates from this empathic duo and their graceful, floating compositions, themselves informed by the polskas and hailings of Swedens' traditional music, and deeply reflective songs of the indigenous Sami people of the far north.
Unique to Nordic jazz it has that languid, uncluttered feeling, with writing that is rich in inner detail, and characterized by a mysterious equilibrium between composed and free materials.
Norrland's roots are modest, and began as a way of killing time during a snowbound Christmas for the two players, in 1999.  When the thaw came however, Knuttson and Norberg were well in their way to forging an intimate language that speaks to jazz and traditional music with equal clarity.  This sound has now fortunately been captured also on a winning series of evocative album releases on the respected ACT label.
Jonas Knutsson will be familiar to fans of the influential ECM label for his collaborations with vocalist Lena Willemark and with multi-instrumentalist Ale Moller, and has become Sweden's premier saxophonist in the folk/world music sphere.
The delicate beauty and joyous optimism of the ‘Norrland' series, alongside Johan Norbert - a guitarist with no small jazz credibility for his work with trumpeter Tiom Hagans and trombonist Nils Landgren - is an ongoing musical love letter to Sweden's northernmost region.
