14. JAZZ EX TEMPORE

Žene u jazzu / Women in Jazz

10.-15.11.2018.

Rosa Brunello – mlada talijanska kontrabasistica i liderica banda Rosa Brunello y Los Fermentos,

12. 11., ponedjeljak, 19 h: Yazz Ahmed: Arapska glazba i jazz

13. 11., utorak, 19 h: Andrea Vicary, Yazz Ahmed, Rosa Brunello, Alba Nacinovich: Žene u jazzu

Završni koncert će se održati u srijedu, 14. 11. u Velikoj dvorani Centra Gervais s početkom u 20 h.

The 14th edition of the Jazz Ex Tempore project is devoted entirely to women in jazz.

For decades, various women's groups have warned of the disproportionate share of women in all industries, including music. Women as composers are represented only with 20%. Of the 367 regular members of the Croatian Society of Composers, there are only 13 women composers of classical and jazz music. The other 73 are musicologists or composers of pop, rock and entertaining music. None of them are in the top 5 of the author's earnings, and only one has a significant earnings from the concerts. Women Jazz musicians in Croatia, as worldwide, are  mostly singers, while jazz instrumentalists can be hardly ever found..

The starting position of women and men in music, as well  in jazz, is simply not the same. Women rarely decide on jazz studiies (there are only about 9%), rarely are bands leaders, rarely deal with composing. One of the reasons for this is the perception of jazz as mostly  male music (in the band a woman is possibly accepted only as a singer), the next reason is a sexual stereotypes about some types of instruments (trumpet, double bass or drums are "male" instruments), so  there are very few female jazz instrumentalists which young girls could see or learn from..

At this year's Jazz Ex Tempore we have invited jazzists who meet these prejudices every day and try to change the perception of women in jazz. They are:

Yazz Ahmed - a Bahaian trumpeter and composer joining her Arab culture with jazz,

Andrea Vicary - British pianist and jazz composer professor at London's Trinity College,

Rosa Brunello - a young Italian counter-bassist and band leader Rosa Brunello and Los Fermentos,

Alba Nacinovich - a Croatian singer/instrumentalist of strong individuality who introduced electronics and live looping in Croatian jazz.

During the duration of the Jazz Ex Tempore project, musicians will perform two open workshops, admission- free, at the ground floor of the Gervais Center:

12. 11. Monday, 19 h: Yazz Ahmed: Arabic music and jazz

13. 11., Tuesday, 19 h: Andrea Vicary, Yazz Ahmed, Rosa Brunello, Alba Nacinovich: Women in jazz

The closing concert will be held on Wednesday, November 14 at the Gervais Center Grand Hall, starting at 20 hrs.

YAZZ AHMED (trumpet, flugelhorn) – BAHREIN

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dORYRncSbOs

Yazz Ahmed is a British Bahraini trumpet and flugelhorn player.

Her music, through which she seeks to blur the lines between jazz, electronic sound design and the music of her mixed heritage, has been described as ‘psychedelic Arabic jazz, intoxicating and compelling’.

Yazz has also recorded and performed with Radiohead, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, ABC, Swing Out Sister, Joan as Police Woman, Tarek Yamani, Amel Zen and has toured the world with art-rock band, These New Puritans.

In 2012, Yazz represented Bahrain in London’s Cultural Olympiad, joining renowned musicians from the Arabian Gulf in collaboration with Transglobal Underground. Yazz was awarded a jazz fellowship from Birmingham Jazzlines in 2014, who supported her during the course of a year in writing a major new suite, Alhaan al Siduri.

In 2015, she was commissioned by Tomorrow’s Warriors, with the support of PRS Women Make Music, to write a suite inspired by courageous and influential female role models. Polyhymnia was premiered at the Purcell Room by a special all female line-up of the Nu Civilisation Orchestra at the WOW! (Women of the World) Festival in March 2015.

During her recent year as an LSO Soundhub composer, she explored writing music for her newly developed quarter-tone flugelhorn, which enables her to get closer to the spiritual nature of the blue notes in Arabic music.

Her first album, Finding My Way Home, 2011, marked the beginning of her exploration of fusing jazz and Arabic music. This was followed in 2017 by her critically acclaimed album, La Saboteuse (Naim), which has brought her to the attention of a global audience.

YAZZ AHMED (truba, krilnica) - BAHREIN

Yazz Ahmed je britansko-bahreinska glazbenica (truba, krilnica) i skladateljica čija glazba nastoji zamagliti linije između jazza, elektronike i tradicionalne arapske glazbe. Njezinu glazbu opisuju kao "psihodelični arapski jazz, opojan i privlačan".

Yazz je snimala i nastupala s Radioheadom, Lee Scratchom Perryjem, ABC-om, Joan As Policewoman, Swing Out Sister, Tarekom Yamaniem, Amelom Zenom i art rock bendom These New Puritans.

Godine 2012. 2014. Piše veliku suitu Alhaan al Siduri, a 2015. je uz podršku  PRS Women Make Music, napisala suitu inspiriranu hrabrim i utjecajnim ženama. (Women of the World) Festivalu.

“blue notes” u arapskoj glazbi.
